You got the same thing I found
when I swapped the shocks and springs on my Miata
. The bump stops had disintegrated almost completely, causing the shocks to hit the bushings. In my case the springs were also rusty and tired, which only made matters worse.

Do your front shocks have covers over them? Apparently the covers are either meant to keep water out of the shock tower but if water does get in the cover keeps the water in there and the bushing disintegrates. But, being mine were 10 years old that’s not too terrible to expect.

The new bushing looks like butter and my lizard brain is telling me to bite it.

Idk, I've had cake that tasted vaguely like burnt petrochemicals.

They do. They open downwards so any water that finds its way inside can drain out, although perhaps some humidity could remain in there.
The shocks that I pulled out were
19 years old.

The white part on the right looks like it could be a wedding cake topper...

Me too. That part looks like it could also be a wedding cake topper... like if two mechanics get married.
